The Mess We're In Ethics talk for Baltic Ventures Liverpool
I recently made my first visit back to the UK in three years to give a talk on Ethics to Baltic Ventures Cohort 1 in Liverpool. Its been a few years since I talked about techno ethics (or lack of it) in the technology sector. Of course all this escalated dramatically with the release of LLLM's into the wild. So I refreshed my previous knowledge with some interesting books. The depressing things was so little had changed and so much had gotten worse. The reality is we can no longer separate technology and politics or indeed capitalism from the mess we're in. When you apply the concept of the Sovereign Individual you begin to see how these boy men that run our large technology firms view themselves. Standing apart from nation states and all the responsibilities therein they care not about paying taxes, about their debilitating impact on society or democracy as they work towards a future where our role will be to serve them in whatever role they choose for us. What I am glad to see is more and more writers stepping up with fantastic insights and some suggestions for the future. When I started talking about this stuff in 2015 there were precious little critics of toxic tech. We need more of these voices as we navigate the coming storms. My slides for anyone interested.
